The Physics of Blazar Optical Emission Regions I: Alignment of Optical Polarization and the VLBI Jet

چکیده
We collected optical and near IR linear polarization data obtained over 20–30 years for a sample of 51 blazars. For each object, we calculated the probability that the distribution of position angles was isotropic. The distribution of these probabilities was sharply peaked, with 27 blazars showing a probability < 15% of an isotropic distribution of position angles. For these 27 objects we defined a preferred position angle. For those 17 out of 27 blazars showing a well-defined radio structure angle (jet position angle) on VLBI scales (1–3mas), we looked at the distribution of angle differences – the optical polarization relative to the radio position angles. This distribution is sharply peaked, especially for the BL Lac objects, with alignment better than 15◦ for half the sample. Those blazars with preferred optical position angles were much less likely to have bent jets on 1–20mas scales. These results support a shock-in-jet hypothesis for the jet optical emission regions.

Accretion Disks , Jets and Blazar Variability
Although blazar variability is probably dominated by emission from relativistic jets, accretion disks should be present in all blazars. These disks produce emission over most of the electromagnetic spectrum; various unstable processes operate in those disks which will lead to variable emission. Here I summarize some of the most relevant disk mechanisms for AGN variability. I also discuss some a...
متن کاملMultifrequency Polarization Properties of Blazars
We report preliminary results of a 3-year multifrequency polarization campaign of 15 AGNs of blazar type, including bimonthly total and polarized intensity imaging at 7 mm with the VLBA. We find that the sources have two different dependences of degree of polarization on wavelength: sub-mm peaked or straight “polarization spectra”. The fractional polarization of the latter group increases with ...
متن کاملThe Core of a Blazar Jet
The nature of the bright upstream end of jets as seen in VLBI images, known as the core, is difficult to specify because it is only weakly resolved on the images. Here the author discusses evidence indicating that the core is either where the optical depth is of order unity or a standing shock somewhat farther downstream. The jet at this point is turbulent, causing the polarization to be low an...
متن کاملCircular Polarization in Turbulent Blazar Jets
Circular polarization (CP) provides an invaluable probe into the underlying plasma content of relativistic jets. CP can be generated within the jet through a physical process known as linear birefringence. This is a physical mechanism through which initially linearly polarized emission produced in one region of the jet is attenuated by Faraday rotation as it passes through other regions of the ...
متن کاملThe Physics of Blazar Optical Emission Regions II: Magnetic Field Orientation, Viewing Angle and Beaming
For a sample of 51 blazars with extensive optical polarization data, we used circular statistics to calculate the scatter among the polarization position angles for each object. We found that this scatter is correlated with the radio core dominance. We compared this relationship with the predictions of a simple transverse shock model. The result suggests that blazar jets are likely to cover a w...
